Safety Shut-off Valves

About Safety Shut-off Valves

Safety shut-off valves close a line and stop the flow of material when a pre-set condition occurs, such as excess flow, a pressure pulse from a broken line, or a temperature change from an idle burner. There are many types of safety shut-off valves. Examples include pilot operated safety valves, pressure safety valves, water shut off valves, gas shut off valves, and fuel shut off valves. A pilot operated safety valve is primarily intended for gas applications. This type of shut-off valve provides system overpressure protection. A pilot operated safety valve is suitable for severe service where dirt, hydrates, and high moisture levels occur in the fluid media. A pressure safety valve is an automatic mechanism for the release of a gas from a boiler or other system when the pressure or temperature exceeds preset limits. A water shut off valve can prevent extensive water damage from plumbing failures. A gas shut off valve is ideally suited for reliable shut off of various fuel gases and liquids in industrial and consumer fuel systems. A fuel shut off valve is designed to rapidly shut off all liquid fuel flow in machinery. Other safety shut-off valves are also available.

Safety shut-off valves function work in different ways. Pilot operated safety valve use the flowing medium itself, through a pilot valve, to apply the closing force on the safety valve disc. A pilot operated safety valve is generally a small safety valve. There are two basic types: diaphragm and piston. The diaphragm pilot operated safety valve is available for low pressure applications. It produces a proportional type action, characteristic of relief valves used in liquid systems. The piston pilot operated safety valve consists of a main valve, which uses a piston shaped closing device and an external pilot valve. Pressure safety valves are actuated by inlet static pressure and characterized by rapid opening or rapid popping action. A pressure safety valve enables a tight shut-off and is for safety only. Water shut off valves often feature a leak detection system. A water shut off valve is generally located outside of a building or facility. Gas shut off valves are available in several varieties, but most use a ball design. With ball valves, a metal ball on a pedestal opens a valve, allowing gas to pass from the service to the building or facility. When a sufficient leak or shaking occurs, the ball drops from the pedestal, closing the valve, shutting off the flow of gas. Fuel shut off valves shuts off the flow of fuel to the engine. A fuel shut off valve also turns off the ignition.
