Hose Clamps and Band Clamps

Hose clamps and band clamps are used to secure pipe, hose, tubing and mating circular parts together. Parts include worm drive hose clamps and profiled V-band clamps. A hose clamp (or clip) is used to securely attach a hose onto a fitting. A band clamp (also called a screw clamp or Jubilee® clamp) is a band (usually stainless steel) into which a screw thread pattern has been cut. One end of the band contains a captive screw. When the screw is turned, it tightens the band around the hose. A stainless steel pipe clamp secures piping and prevents movement. In an electrical junction box, a cable clamp holds wiring in place and prevents the wiring from rubbing against the sharp edges of the box. A V-band clamp provides a secure, reliable connection for flanged joints and provides an alternative to the standard 3-bolt flange. A tube clamp or tubing clamp is used to rapidly connect round or square tubing for the construction of fixtures, supports, and equipment bases. Jubilee® is a registered trademark of L. Robinson and Co. (Gillingham) Ltd. Hose clamps and band clamps can be used to connect pipes or rods to correct problems in alignment.

A stainless steel hose clamp is preferred where moisture can cause corrosion. To ensure a tight seal and prevent leaks, hose clamps and band clamps must apply sufficient clamping force (in pounds) for the pressure inside the hose. The clamping force should be applied evenly around the diameter of the hose and the barb must be smooth and free of nicks, scratches, or contamination. An important specification for hose clamps and band clamps is the nominal diameter (Dn).

Hose clamps can be manufactured according to MIL-SPEC AA-52506B. For fluid power systems, hose clamps and band clamps are covered by he International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee TC 131 Subcommittee 7 (sealing devices). When used in surgery, hose clamps and band clamps meet specific requirements, such as ASTM International (formerly called the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard ASTM F982 (disclosure of characteristics of surgically implanted clamps for carotid occlusion). ASTM F2098 describes requirements for stainless steel clamps used to secure SDR9 cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing to metal insert fittings.
