Double Diaphragm Pumps

Double diaphragm pumps are displacement pumps that compress fluid by decreasing the volume of a chamber containing the fluid.  Two diaphragms are mechanically, hydraulically, or pneumatically oscillated to displace the liquid or gas.  A chamber is divided with one side using hydraulic fluid, air, or a motorized drive to move the diaphragm.  The media is pulsed through the pump without contacting the actuating media.  Double diaphragm pumps are often a component in a complete fluid transfer system where a switch or valve is used to control the flow of the media continuously or on demand.   In applications where sludge, sewage, or other suspended solids are parts of the consistency of the media, a strainer can be used to protect the pump from debris that can clog or interfere with the pump operation. The effectiveness of double diaphragm pumps is due to the balanced flow of the media cycling through the dual chambers. If the larger particles settle within the chambers, one side of the double diaphragm pump may overextend other components of the double diaphragm pump and cause fluctuation in the outlet pressure or flow.  A broken seal may also interfere with the suction pressure, or combine with the pumped media.

Wear on the diaphragm or flap in diaphragm pumps may be due to the corrosive properties of fluids or gases and/or the excessive air supply pressures in the pump application.  As with many pumps, the internal components of double diaphragm pumps are customizable and replaceable.  Diaphragms can come in many different materials including Buna-N or Nitrile, EDPM, Neoprene, Polyester, Polyurethane, Rubber, PTFE or Polytetrafluorethylene.  Prolonged diaphragm life may be possible if the diaphragm pump is run dry to prime.  The housing may be exposed to various grades of water, oils, and other solvents as well as high pressures and high temperatures.  Acetal, Aluminum, Cast Iron, Hastelloy, Polypropylene, Stainless Steel, and other housing materials can be specified for double diaphragm pumps. Compatibility charts may be consulted for single fluids. Stainless steel is used in many sanitary and high temperature applications.

Since many automotive, water, food and beverage, and marine applications require that diaphragm pumps run continuously, a feature of a double diaphragm pump may be the capability to run without the presence of fluid or other media.  Many diaphragm pumps can run dry for extended periods of time without sustaining any damage to the internal components.  The suction lift for wet or dry applications will vary in each application where double diaphragm pumps are used.
